Moisturizing Shampoos For Natural Hair That Clarify and Hydrate
Ever had the wash day experience where you actually need to use shampoo and not simply co-wash like we all love to do? So you pick out your favorite low lather natural hair shampoo with more natural based ingredients but there’s a problem. Yes, it’s moisturizing. And yes, it doesn’t strip your hair of its natural oils. But does it feel clean? Meh.
If you are one to co wash regularly, there will come a day when you need to use a lathering high quality shampoo to wash your hair. There is no way around it when you have a lot of build up. But naturally, you don’t want your strands feeling like a brillo pad when you’re done so what are you going to do?
Start adding a few high quality moisturizing shampoos to your collection. Ideally we can go high end for these products because we don’t have to whip them out often (although these are so moisturizing, you totally could if you wanted to).
Below are my top moisturizing shampoos that actually leave my hair and scalp feeling clean but not stripped of its natural oils. Some of these, I can even lightly detangle with which is a huge plus.

Nexxus Therappe Ultimate Moisture Shampoo
I can’t say enough great things about this product and it’s the number one go to for me and my daughter on wash day. It swiftly removes build up on the first wash so I don’t have to repeat which saves me so much time.
The Nexxus shampoo also rinses clean from the hair and I love that it’s silicone free. The creamy texture spreads evenly over the scalp and roots to ensure that your hair is squeaky clean and the slip of this shampoo also allows you to begin to lightly finger detangle.
Key ingredients include a caviar and protein complex for long lasting hydration as well as coconut oil for a uniquely moisturizing shampoo experience. This rich lathering shampoo checks all of the boxes and upon rinsing, your hair will actually feel clean and soft.
Cecred Hydrating Shampoo
I don’t usually jump on the celebrity bandwagon when it comes to products however when this one became available I jumped at it because, Beyonce. Have you seen her natural strands?! That said, if you for some odd reason are not a fan, please don’t sell yourself short by dismissing this product. You will absolutely become a fan of Cecred’s shampoo once you try it,
Key ingredients like cationic hyaluronic acid, an african oil blend and collagen complex deeply moisturize the hair while shampooing and cleaning the scalp thoroughly. Curls feel moisturized and juicy after the product is rinsed out but not weighed down and heavy.
Also, the fragrance makes for a very luxurious shower experience if that’s how you choose to shampoo.
Kristin Ess Micellar Shampoo
First of all, the packaging of this shampoo says it all. Not only are all of the key benefits listed right up front like purifying, shine boosting and scalp moisturizing; but this highly moisturizing shampoo comes with an applicator tip!
Now initially you might think that it would be overkill to apply shampoo directly to the scalp but it’s actually genius. This allows you to get the product where it’s most needed and blast the buildup at the source.
The silky formula creates a beautiful lather that easily runs down the shaft of the hair to make sure you have a thoroughly clean experience. This micellar shampoo is also a sulfate and silicone free product which makes using this regularly a dream for curly girls.
Healthy Hair 101 with Moisturizing Shampoos
Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp but you won’t get to a healthy scalp with a bunch of build up layered on top. It’s a shame that shampoo gets such a bad wrap amongst curly girls with tighter coils because this is hair care 101.
So many of us are missing out on our “hair goals” by skipping this step. One thing a wash and go hates is product build up. While water does cleanse, most of the time it’s not enough to clear the debris that old products can leave behind.
If you’ve been avoiding shampoo for fear of dryness, give one of these products a try. Also, what are some of your favorite moisturizing shampoos for natural hair? Leave a comment below and share your main go to’s.
