Best Detangling Brush for Natural Hair – FHI UnBrush Plus Review

The Best Detangling Brush for Natural Hair?

Different styles of detangling brushes are found all over the internet.  Social media platforms often display them as these miracle tools that melt away tangles but it took me some time to be convinced. Having tried the tangle teezer’s and various wide tooth combs I couldn’t classify any of them as game changers for me. 

However, when I tried the FHI Unbrush Plus,  I was convinced that this was a gem of a product. This detangling brush really does it all! 

How I Like to Use This Detangling Tool

Detangling while wet and saturated with product is, expectantly, a breeze. The real surprise came when I saw how easily I could detangle while dry with no product! It’s truly a rare find. 

Now I do not recommend detangling dry hair regularly. I actually spritzed my hair lightly with a spray bottle first. This brush is great for detangling mostly dry hair if you want to get a blowout look without using a blow dryer. Working in small sections is best on dry hair when using this brush. 

FHI Unbrush Plus Performance

The bristles on the brush are delicate on strands but stand up to the toughest tangles. This way no broken bits of plastic are left randomly in the hair. This detangling brush glides through thick hair very well. Since the tangles melted down so quickly I was able to get a scalp massage while detangling. Major plus! 

I also had success starting at the roots of my hair! Now in the natural hair world, detangling starting at the ends is a best practice and one that I follow faithfully. However, it’s nice to know that this tool won’t damage your hair if you do start at the roots. 

 Pro Tip: hold the brush vertically when detangling to make those tangles melt away with minimal pulling on the strands. 

Another win that makes this brush a major plus (pun intended) is how easy it is on my daughter’s hair. We had a much easier time detangling than normal. I saturate the hair with product and then brush through. There isn’t any snagging and there were no tears which is a major win on wash day in our household. 

The FHI Unbrush Plus Design

This brush isn’t super new. Its sister, the FHI Unbrush, has been on the market for a while and also works beautifully. It’s the same brush with a few noticeable differences. 

The spacing between the bristles on the Unbrush Plus are wider than the original Unbrush and the bristles themselves are longer on the Unbrush Plus which make it ideal for thicker hair. 

If you aren’t able to get your hands on the Unbrush Plus, the original Unbrush is definitely a winner. It works well wet or dry and also has a vented back so that you can blow dry with it as well. I use the original Unbrush plus on both of my boys’ hair since they have shorter hair.

I have not been this excited about a detangling tool since the Tangle Teezer days. The Unbrush Plus is the perfect brush to use for long, thick hair.
