Before You Start Your Wash Day Routine, Remember…
1. Keep Hair Detangled and Stretched
Prior to wash and go styling, you must keep your hair detangled and stretched while in other protective styles. If your hair has been in a bun or braided extensions for example, proper detangling prior to and after wash and go styling is a must!
Hair sheds about 100 strands daily regardless of the style you’re wearing. If you know you’ll be wearing your hair in a bun or other protective style, thoroughly detangle before styling your hair in the bun.
This is good prep for the wash and go you know you will do later in the week. Detangling from this position will be a breeze and should only take you about 5-10 minutes to do.
2. Keep Hair Hydrated! – Easy Wash Day Routine Tip
Keeping your hair moisturized is a well known pillar for healthy hair however, moisture doesn’t happen during protective styling as often as it should.
If you have your hair in a bun for 5 days, you should be removing that bun each night and moisturizing your strands. Protective styling is not a reason to ignore applying moisture to your hair.
If you keep up a regular moisture regimen, even when wearing protective styles, your wash and go routine will go so much faster. Moisturized hair is more pliable and detangles easily. Easy detangling equals a quick and easy wash and go routine.
During Your Wash Day Routine
1. Wash Hair In Sections
For a quick and easy wash and go routine, I recommend splitting the hair into at least two sections while washing. Putting the hair into sections allows for more control of the hair during the shampoo process.
With that control, you can stretch the hair while washing to prevent more tangles from forming. Less tangles, equals less time spent detangling. This also ensures you get all of the built up product removed from your hair.
2. Invest in Great Tools For a Quick and Easy Wash Day Routine
Tools are the back bone of wash and go styling and the good news is you don’t need that many. The key is to invest in high quality tools to get the best performance which will ultimately shorten the time it takes to style your hair.
- One great detangling brush can make a wash and go finished in record time. Choose a tool that will last. It should have strong and sturdy bristles and be easy to clean. My personal favorite is the FHI Unbrush line.
- One high powered hair dryer. You can choose between a sit under dryer or a traditional hand held dryer. Make sure it has good power to dry your hair effectively.
- One high quality scarf to make your style last. After your wash and go is complete, minimize frizz to maximize the retention of your curls. Great scarves that have satin on both sides or 100 percent silk are worthy investments in your hair care tool belt.
3. Keep Only a Few Winning Hair Products
A cluttered cabinet full of hair products on wash day quickly leads to decision fatigue and unnecessary time spent trying to figure out what products you should use.
Skip this confusion by committing to either one product line all together or one option for your shampoo, conditioner, leave in conditioner and styler. Either way, you should only have 4 products at any given time.
When those products are used up, then you can assess how they worked for you and move on to something new once they are gone.
This will allow you to decide quickly what you will be using and choose the appropriate techniques to get those products to perform the way you want them to.
