Make Any Shampoo a Moisturizing Shampoo

One thing about me is I’m a “make it work” kind of girl. This is particularly true when it comes to my hair products. I just can’t bear to waste the money or see the product crowding up my shelves.

One area that rears its head most often is around my shampoos. Over the years, I haven’t always knocked it out of the park with my shampoo choices. This has led me to figuring out ways to get the best return on my product investment.

Below you will find my three best methods to make sure you turn that not so great shampoo into a moisturizing shampoo experience.

Drench Your Hair in Conditioner First

This is my go to moisturizing shampoo hack. My conditioner is already nearby in the shower and I can quickly coat my hair and lightly detangle before shampooing.

To take this up a notch, give yourself a little extra time and allow the conditioner to sit on the hair for a few minutes. You can add heat by sitting under a dryer or simply cover with a cap and do a household chore or two.

Allowing the conditioner to sit for a bit will loosen up any tangles and infuse your hair with a bit of hydration before going in with your not so favorite shampoo.

Hot, Emphasis on the HOT, Oil Treatment

I’m not a fan of slathering oil onto my hair but I will do it for a hot oil treatment. Without heat, that oil will do nothing but sit on top of the hair. Paired with heat, oil works wonders for your curls.

My go to choices are olive oil and coconut oil. You can even have fun with this and do a nice oil blend. Liberally apply your oil of choice to your strands and then cover with a shower cap or a heated cap. If you do not have a heated cap, you can sit under your hooded dryer

Raid Your Kitchen DIY Hair Mask

Of course you can always use your favorite brand store bought mask but where’s the fun in that? This avocado, honey hair mask is great for imparting moisture to your strands before you shampoo.

  1. Split the hair into 4 sections
  2. Mash 2 avocados thoroughly
  3. Add ½ cup of honey
  4. Add ½ cup coconut or olive oil (melt the coconut oil first)
  5. Whip the mixture with an electric mixer or blender
  6. Apply to the hair
  7. Cover with a cap and sit under the dryer for 15 minutes

I have really long, thick hair so I like to add a lot of oil and honey to help the avocado spread better. If you whip the mixture, the fats from the avocado are more likely to penetrate the hair.

This moisturizing shampoo hack is a great reason to use a shampoo that clarifies a bit more since it will thoroughly remove the build up from the avocado and the stickiness of the honey.

Make These Moisturizing Shampoo Hacks Work

As you can see, there’s no need to waste shampoos that are less than stellar. Get curious and start experimenting to get the most out of the money you’ve already spent.

This will help you reduce the clutter in your product cabinet and give you a sense of personal power when it comes to buying any product. You’ll always know how to make it work.
